Solution removes 100 pounds from the airframe, improving overall aircraft efficiency
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – March 9, 2026 – StandardAero (NYSE: SARO), a leading independent pure-play provider of aerospace engine aftermarket services including engine maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) and engine component repair, today announced the launch of its new Tailboom Modification STC offering for Bell 212 and Bell 412 helicopters, an innovative structural upgrade designed to increase useful load, reduce maintenance burden, and improve overall aircraft efficiency.
The modification removes the original composite honeycomb baggage compartment in Bell 212 and 412 helicopters. Traditional honeycomb structures are susceptible to corrosion, moisture intrusion, and delamination, particularly in offshore and high heat environments. StandardAero’s solution replaces the composite honeycomb with a durable, aluminum sheet metal semi-monocoque design, transforming a maintenance intensive area of the aircraft into a stronger, lighter, and more economical solution. The upgrade delivers more than 100 pounds of total weight reduction, comprised of over 50 pounds from the tailboom and over 50 pounds in required nose ballast. These weight savings translate directly into increased payload capacity, improved fuel efficiency, and greater mission flexibility, allowing operators to carry more passengers, cargo, or specialized equipment on every flight.
“This modification was designed with the operator in mind. By reducing empty weight, improving center of gravity, and eliminating common structural maintenance drivers, we’re helping our customers increase revenue potential while lowering total cost of ownership,” said Andrew Park, General Manager of StandardAero’s Langley facility. “We are thrilled to announce this modification is already STC-approved under FAA, EASA, and Transport Canada. As part of the product’s introduction, StandardAero is proud to recognize Agrarflug Helilift as the European Launch customer, and Wildcat Helicopters as the Canadian launch customer for the Tailboom Modification program” added Park, reinforcing the strong demand for practical, performance-driven upgrades for Bell mediums around the world.
“We are always evaluating solutions that improve payload capability while reducing long term maintenance exposure,” said Mike Michaud, President of Wildcat Helicopters. “StandardAero’s Tailboom Modification delivers meaningful weight savings and addresses structural concerns we see in demanding operating environments.”
The upgrade structure features new higher strength longerons, new bulkhead frames for improved load transfer, no life limited parts, and improved inspection access, all of which serve to enhance durability without introducing additional fatigue or cyclic stress concerns. Engineered for seamless integration, the modification is compatible with existing flight controls, driveshaft assemblies, and installed STCs including the BLR Aerospace FastFin® system. This Tailboom Modification offers operators a consistent, fleet-wide solution for utility, offshore, firefighting, EMS, and other mission critical operations.
